« Après plus de 70 ans de carrière du groupe, je pense qu’on peut laisser la place aux jeunes ! » résume Clyde Wright dans un large sourire qui dissimule mal une intense émotion. Le célèbre groupe vocal américain se lance dans son dernier tour du monde où, partout ou presque, il a su conquérir une notoriété exceptionnelle en restant fidèle à un art virtuose du negro-spriritual et du gospel. « Partout, les gens ressentent notre musique de la même façon ; même si souvent le public ne comprend pas ce que l’on chante, quelque chose d’autre passe : le sentiment, le feeling, le rythme, l’expression… Cette musique est née d’un mélange de la religion des blancs et des rythmes africains. Et c’est un mélange que le monde entier a l’air d’accepter » souligne Clyde Wright, vétéran du groupe. Créé en 1934 en Virginie, le Golden Gate restera aussi dans l’histoire pour avoir été, non sans mal, parmi les tout premiers artistes américains noirs à s’imposer dans l’Amérique blanche raciste des années 30-50. Une retraite émouvante.
