Sans doute la détonation de la rencontre avec George Gershwin (1898-1937) fut-elle trop forte pour s’éteindre de sitôt. Au printemps dernier, José Montalvo et Dominique Hervieu mettaient en scène, à l’Opéra de Lyon, Porgy and Bess, « opéra nègre américain » comme le définit Truman Capote, dans les cités d’aujourd’hui. Les chorégraphes ne partagent-ils pas avec le compositeur américain le goût du métissage entre savant et populaire, lui alliant volontiers jazz, blues, charleston et compositions classiques, eux conjuguant danse contemporaine, hip-hop ou africaine ? Avec Good Morning, Mr. Gershwin, le tandem prolonge la conversation par un portrait chorégraphique de l’artiste. Le parcours débute dans le Broadway des années 30, à la folle époque des girls et des comédies musicales, qui oubliait la misère des Noirs parqués dans les bidonvilles. Puis après Trois préludes pour piano, qui laissent bruire leur douce mélancolie sur un pas de deux à claquette, les mélodies de Porgy and Bess montrent une Amérique plus sombre, saignée par la crise et la ségrégation. Cette partition pour 14 danseurs, incrustée de vidéos et d’images foisonnantes, se déploie en un tourbillon gestuel étourdissant, jubilatoire et poétique à la fois.
