À vingt ans, l’un des représentants majeurs du Nouveau Cinéma allemand des années 70, le dramaturge R. W. Fassbinder, écrit Gouttes d’eau sur pierres brûlantes (1965-66), œuvre autobiographique qu’il ne montera jamais lui-même. En dépit du changement profond des mentalités des sociétés post-industrielles concernant les jugements collectifs sur l’homosexualité, le sujet tabou, porté de façon brute sur un plateau de théâtre, dérange. Les avant-gardes artistiques des sixties et seventies comme le cinéma britannique qui reconnaît aux homosexuels une affectivité réservée jusque-là aux hétéros témoignent progressivement d’un regard affranchi. Gouttes dans l’océan dans la mise en scène subtile de Mathieu Cruciani porte la griffe de l’artiste allemand. Un pur joyau d’écriture au registre soutenu, un échange verbal élégant et une argumentation ciselée et acérée sur l’universalité du couple amoureux, qu’il soit homo ou hétéro, une sorte de Combat de nègres et de chien de Koltès, avant la lettre. La passion sentimentale anime et tourmente les hommes, les fait vivre et souffrir en même temps. L’amour, écartelé entre plaisir et réalité, est un bourreau exterminateur qui n’épargne ni homme, ni femme, ni hétérosexuels, ni homosexuels.
Le sexe les réunit et le « vivre ensemble » les sépare.
Franz (romantique Yann Métivier), vingt ans, versé dans l’art et la littérature, est abordé par Léopold (séduisant Julien Geskoff), trente-cinq ans, dont l’emploi bien rémunéré accapare les journées. D’un côté, un poète contemplatif, à l’écoute de l’« Alleluia » de Haendel, et de l’autre, un battant hyperactif et dominateur. Le sexe les réunit et le « vivre ensemble » les sépare. Léopold joue les tyrans à la maison, réduisant Franz à un rôle féminin traditionnel : « Un jour il y a eu quelque chose…, une divergence, mais, à partir de là, il n’y eut plus de nous commun, mais seulement des divergences. » S’ensuivent des liaisons sans amitié et des coucheries sans amour. Les adultères, commis avec l’ancienne amie respective de chacun (Laetitia Le Mesle, Émilie Beauvais ou Christel Zubillaga), se terminent en tragédie, démasquant le conflit entre l’organisation socioéconomique – celui qui tient la bourse est le plus fort – et la vérité des pulsions sentimentales. Sous les « réclames » TV de la société de consommation des années 70, se confrontent les deux puissances qui régissent l’humanité, l’amour et la mort. Yann Métivier et Julien Geskoff diffusent sur la scène une présence rare faite du rêve d’un bonheur somptueux, des figures de pudeur brûlées à la flamme du désir.
