Doté d’une voix à la fois puissante et délicate, Gregory Porter est sans conteste « le » crooner incontournable du moment. Pourtant cet Américain au drôle de chapeau vissé sur la tête a déjà connu plusieurs vies. Né en 1971 à Los Angeles, il a participé à 27 ans à un album-hommage du génial flûtiste Hubert Laws dédié à Nat King Cole. Le garçon a ensuite multiplié les comédies musicales comme It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues et ce n’est qu’en 2010 qu’il a imposé sa patte sur disque, avec Water où il interprète a cappella le Feeling Good popularisé par Nina Simone puis Muse. Depuis, ce fan de Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers et Gil Scott-Heron réussit à séduire dans un même souffle les jazzophiles comme les amoureux de la soul.
