C’est pour faire se rejoindre ses deux passions que Henri Gruvman a inventé Grugru, en 1979, et ainsi donné naissance au ciné-théâtre, forme hybride combinant art dramatique et septième art. Une forme à travers laquelle l’image cinématographique est traitée non comme une toile de fond, mais comme un véritable partenaire de la scène. Personnage né des rêves du comédien-auteur-réalisateur, de ses rires mais aussi de ses pleurs, Grugru ne parle pas. « Surprenant comme un enfant, comme un clown, explique son créateur, il bouge, il est musical, il danse… Sa caractéristique principale est de constamment interpréter le monde, de trouver les explications les plus cocasses et les plus imaginatives à ce qui lui arrive. » Tendre et naïf, burlesque et poétique, Grugru confronte ainsi présence scénique et scènes filmées dans ce qu’Henri Gruvman envisage comme « une rencontre amoureuse entre le théâtre et le cinéma ».
