Fondateur du théâtre du Chêne Noir en 1967, devenu depuis un lieu emblématique en Avignon, Gérard Gelas a créé nombre de ses textes, souvent nés dans l’urgence et la nécessité. Guantanamour a été rédigé en 2002, quelques mois après l’ouverture de la prison militaire de haute sécurité de Guantanamo sur l’île de Cuba, dont les prisonniers ne sont pas assimilés à des prisonniers de guerre mais à des « combattants illégaux », un statut juridique flou autorisant le non-respect des conventions internationales. La pièce met face à face deux hommes, Rassoul, membre présumé d’Al Qaïda, jeune garçon de la banlieue lyonnaise, et Billy Harst, G.I. Une proximité forcée, dans une cage grillagée, entre deux êtres que tout oppose, l’un en tenue militaire, l’autre en tenue orange. Un huis clos où petit à petit, l’auteur – metteur en scène fait quitter aux deux protagonistes les identités guerrières. Ils découvrent leur commune humanité, une semblable désespérance et une commune révolte contre leur destin. Le message de Gérard Gelas est clair : « il y a urgence à se parler malgré tous les interdits, toutes les idéologies qui, aux quatre coins de la planète, dressent les hommes les uns contre les autres. » Après six ans de tournée, le spectacle est présenté pour la première fois à Paris, et n’a rien perdu de sa brûlante actualité.
