Cette série nous fait remonter aux débuts de l’art cinématographique à travers trois chefs-d’œuvre du cinéma muet : Alexandre Nevski, le film de Sergueï Eisenstein de 1938 et sa musique originale composée par Prokofiev (avec la contralto Evguenia Podymalkina, le Chœur du Théâtre Mariinski et la Philharmonie de Bruxelles-L’Orchestre des Flandres sous la direction d’Ernst Van Tiel), Le Cuirassé Potemkine, autre classique du cinéma soviétique, réalisé par Eisenstein treize ans plus tôt, revisité par le duo techno-électro Zombie Zombie, et enfin le célèbre Napoléon d’Abel Gance qui a inspiré de nombreux compositeurs et arrangeurs, parmi lesquels Arthur Honegger dont la musique sera interprétée par l’Orchestre symphonique de la Garde républicaine, dirigé par Laurent Petitgirard avec des improvisations de Jean-François Zygel et Thierry Escaich. A noter aussi, dans le même cycle, le concert (sans cinéma) du 15 décembre à 20h dirigé par Emmanuel Krivine à la tête de La Chambre philharmonique dans L’Ouverture d’«Egmont», le Triple concerto et la Symphonie n° 3 «Héroïque» de Beethoven.
