« Si Richard II raconte la chute, Richard III raconte l’ascension vers le pouvoir. Son personnage de monstre difforme est une figure mythique que j’aborde ici par le prisme de la théâtralité. Mon Richard III est une sorte de Monsieur Loyal, qui utilise son talent d’acteur, qui sait jouer d’une large palette d’émotions pour séduire et parvenir à ses fins. Sa quête personnelle, qu’il a déjà exposée dans Henry VI, vient d’une douleur intime très forte, qui le rend extraordinaire et détestable à la fois. C’est pour moi une pièce sur la duperie, le populisme, la propagande, dont le héros ne peut pas être qu’un monstre froid avide de pouvoir.
Un théâtre épidermique et habité
La distribution sera en majeure partie la même que pour Richard II, et c’est Thibault Perrenoud qui interprètera Richard III. Faire un théâtre de troupe est très important pour moi. Je ne vois pas Richard III comme une pièce sombre ; sans rechercher l’entertainment ou l’excès, cette troupe m’aide à trouver une théâtralité joueuse, à créer un théâtre de fête et de plaisir. En tant que dramaturge, Clément Camar-Mercier a également réalisé une nouvelle traduction et construit une adaptation pour les neuf interprètes qui seront au plateau. Tout en restant très fidèle au texte d’origine, il a accéléré le rythme, a voulu conjuguer exigence et accessibilité. J’ai envie avec cette pièce que des ados de 15 ans puissent se dire que Shakespeare est très compréhensible, d’avoir également une poésie du texte qui soit préservée en même temps que des situations très concrètes. J’essaye de créer un théâtre épidermique et habité, afin qu’on croie aux rapports qui se produisent au plateau, à la colère comme à la déclaration d’amour. »
