« Je n’écris pas pour les enfants. Les enfants n’existent pas. J’essaie d’écrire depuis l’enfance. Le point de départ, c’est toujours l’abandon à une rêverie sur l’enfance. Une rêverie d’adulte en terrain désolé. », dit Fabrice Melquiot à propos de l’histoire de l’anachronique et poétique relation entre Armance et Guitou, ami d’enfance de son père revenu du passé. Le directeur de la Comédie de l’Est s’empare de ce texte, dont il dit qu’il est « un coup de cœur ». « C’est une pièce très limpide et pourtant pas si simple, écrite avec une grande science du théâtre, épure et économie. C’est un vrai défi pour la mise en scène, puisqu’il faut jouer sur le temps qui passe, afin que les adultes délivrent leur âme d’enfant. », dit Guy Pierre Couleau. Dans l’espace restreint, confortable et rassurant d’un bifrontal intime, Armance aide les adultes à dialoguer avec l’enfance et offre à tous l’occasion de reproduire l’expérience de l’écrivain : « revenir aux réalités alternatives de l’enfance pour répondre aux réalités subjectives de la mort », selon les mots de Fabrice Melquiot.
