On se croirait dans des improvisations jazz. Les œuvres « non mesurées » de la période baroque ont pour particularité de laisser à l’interprète une grande liberté de jeu, en particulier du point de vue rythmique. Ce type d’écriture est déjà présent chez les Italiens, dans les toccatas de Frescobaldi, de Rossi… Mais c’est surtout en France que ce style propice aux ornementations les plus audacieuses va s’épanouir. Les Préludes non mesurés de Louis Couperin et ceux de d’Anglebert en sont le meilleur exemple. Gustav Leonhardt, 80 ans et en pleine forme, consacre son récital à la Cité de la musique à ce répertoire souvent délaissé. Il jouera sur deux instruments du Musée de la musique : un fac-similé de Tibaut de Toulouse de 1691 et une reconstitution de Carlo Grimadi de 1703. Deux bijoux idoines pour les musiques françaises et italiennes.
