Comment l’aventure de ce diptyque a-t-elle commencé ?
Guy-Pierre Couleau : J’ai d’abord eu un coup de cœur pour Les Justes il y a trois ans. Patrice Martinet, le directeur de L’Athénée, a accueilli sa création, la pièce a bien marché et a entamé une tournée. L’envie de monter Les Mains sales est venue après, quand j’ai su que les deux pièces avaient été écrites en même temps. J’ai trouvé intéressant de les faire entendre par la même équipe artistique, d’en faire une vraie aventure de troupe dans un même système de décor.
Quels liens entre ces deux textes ?
G.-P. C. : Ils se répondent l’un à l’autre. La création des Mains sales date de 48, celle des Les Justes de 49. A l’époque, Sartre et Camus étaient encore amis mais on sent pointer leur discorde, qui finira en brouille radicale, sur la question de la justification des moyens par les fins. Camus considère que la cause révolutionnaire est juste mais qu’elle exige qu’on cible l’attentat. Sartre affirme qu’il faut se salir les mains pour la cause révolutionnaire : selon lui, on peut utiliser tous les moyens. Chez Camus, le nihiliste russe arrête son geste à cause des deux enfants innocents dans la calèche.

Quelles différences entre ces deux écritures ?
G.-P. C. : Apposer les deux pièces révèle leurs différences. On trouve chez Camus une structure rigoriste à la manière des classiques. Les Justes sont un essai de tragédie moderne. L’écriture de Sartre, au contraire, échappe à la classification et rejoint un théâtre baroque et épique. Il n’est jamais là où on l’attend : il fait arriver le burlesque dans la tragédie, le drame dans la comédie. Au-delà de ces différences, les deux pièces répondent à la question de l’engagement, en l’abordant sous l’aspect du compromis chez Sartre, de l’amour de la justice chez Camus. Ce n’est pas tant l’actualité de ces deux philosophies qui m’intéressait que la théâtralité de ces œuvres ; et en cherchant le corps des pensées par le corps des acteurs, on peut faire entendre l’actualité de ces paroles. Il y a quelque chose d’assez prémonitoire chez Camus et quelque chose d’assez en prise avec la réalité chez Sartre.
Cette aventure de théâtre est aussi celle d’une équipe…
G.-P. C. : Oui ! Ce travailnous a permis de retrouver la notion de troupe et de travail en équipe. Depuis ces cinq ou six dernières années où les métiers de la scène sont attaqués et fragilisés, ce travail a constitué ma réponse d’artisan et de metteur en scène à cette situation. Nous faisons entendre des textes, le public adhère à notre projet, nous le jouons pendant trois saisons, nous créons des emplois. Je suis très admiratif de la constance des artistes qui font partie de cette troupe et de la tâche difficile qui est la leur de passer d’une pièce à l’autre. Pour eux, c’est aussi une aventure humaine et artistique extraordinaire. Nous retrouvons ainsi l’esprit de ces grandes aventures de troupe qui existaient encore dans les années 50, au moment de la création de ces pièces.
