« L’utilisation des jumelles d’opéra est interdite. Le tribunal n’est pas un lieu de représentation ». C’est ainsi que le juge ouvre l’audience du procès du meurtrier Friedrich Haarmann, dit le « boucher de Hanovre » en 1924. Ces parolesdu dramaturge allemand Marius von Mayenburgont provoqué le talent de Françoise Delrue pour « édifier » sur la scène ce Haarmann, un spectacle lunaire entre audace et méditation sombre sur une époque instable. Qui est le tueur ? Un indic de la police, un mauvais garçon trafiquant, un homosexuel orgueilleux et vindicatif, Haarmann est un peu tout cela. Jérôme Baëlen interprète ce cocktail de perversité simulatrice, un monstre jugé pour les meurtres de vingt-cinq jeunes gens dont les cadavres ont été dépecés, morcelés avant qu’ils ne soient jetés dans la rivière de la ville. Dans cette période de crise de l’après-guerre, la viande se fait rare, le marché noir sévit, la police est aveugle et les voisins soupçonneux ne sauraient se passer des moindres avantages. De leur côté, les complices de Haarmann, de douteux petits amis, dont Hans (Pierre Cartonnet), annoncent les fascistes à venir, les nazillons en puissance. La pièce aux séquences non linéaires livre une écriture tendue et tonique ; elle retrace le procès d’un barbare de façon éclatée et morcelée, à l’image des corps sacrifiés à la dérive.
Un labyrinthe tourmenté, fait de couloirs et de coursives
Le montage est un matériau brut dont Delrue s’emploie à restituer la qualité cinématographique, entre le rapport du juge ou du commissaire (Jean-Pierre Duthoit), les dialogues de Haarmann avec ses victimes, le retour sur soi du prisonnier qui fait le récit de son « modus operandi » macabre, sans oublier les interrogatoires entre l’inculpé et les autorités. Le kaléidoscope des angles de vue tourne sur la culpabilité et la responsabilité de l’homme aux prises avec une société privée de repères. Dans la nuit blafarde, les rideaux tremblent, on entendrait la terreur tangible et l’effroi des victimes bâillonnées, une ambiance de polar noir. La scénographie dessine un labyrinthe tourmenté, fait de couloirs et de coursives, un enchevêtrement de sous-sols, d’étages emboîtés et de toitures propres au ciel de Hanovre d’où l’on croit s’échapper. Mais ce parcours urbain de coupe-gorge ne permet qu’une liberté fausse des corps qui étouffent et gémissent dans la vacuité confuse des valeurs étranglées, dans la brume des flics, des jeunes mecs et des commerces illicites. Les ténèbres se rapprochent de la vision sadienne, « cette sorte d’horreur religieuse qui fait naître à la fois la crainte dans les âmes timides, le projet du crime dans les coeurs féroces. » L’atrocité dénonce une humanité perdue, entre Fritz Lang et Fassbinder. Un SOS efficace.
