Après Le Roi Lear, Othello et Macbeth, Yoshihiro Kurita (actuel directeur associé du Niigata City Performing Arts Center) poursuit son travail sur l’œuvre de Shakespeare avec Hamlet. Un Hamlet revisité par la tradition théâtrale japonaise, au sein duquel le metteur en scène confère au prince du Danemark des allures de moine zen. Assis en tailleur, vêtu de noir, crâne rasé : le personnage reste immobile jusqu’au dénouement de la pièce, à l’intérieur d’un cadre épuré visant à ce que « les mots retrouvent leur force », à ce que « l’imagination du spectateur [soit] stimulée ». C’est ainsi un spectacle traversé par l’univers du nô que présente aujourd’hui Yoshihiro Kurita à la Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, mais aussi par l’univers du bunraku, forme de théâtre de marionnettes datant du XVIIème siècle. Un spectacle qui, en utilisant les codes esthétiques de la tradition japonaise, souhaite redonner « toute son intensité et sa violence au texte de Shakespeare ».
