« Pour moi, un spectacle, ce n’est pas un produit, déclare le metteur en scène, c’est un bricolage. » Il n’est peut-être pas de meilleure approche du travail de Matthias Langhoff que celle-ci : envisager ses créations si singulières, si éminemment personnelles, comme des bricolages. Des bricolages savants, forains, poétiques, foisonnants, sensibles, métaphysiques, denses, indociles… Des bricolages qui donnent naissance à de vastes champs d’accumulations, à des surenchères d’entremêlements, de superpositions, de télescopages théâtraux. Comme si, touche après touche, les spectacles du metteur en scène allemand se construisaient à la faveur d’innombrables expérimentations artisanales : certaines d’entre elles prenant corps dans la représentation finale, d’autres s’effaçant en laissant derrière elles l’empreinte incertaine de leur furtive existence. Le théâtre de Matthias Langhoff révèle, ainsi, un espace du jaillissement et de la liberté, un espace de l’insoumission qui ne semble jamais s’en laisser imposer par un quelconque a priori. Pour autant — et c’est sans doute là l’une de ses immenses qualités — ce théâtre ne se limite en aucun cas aux appels de l’anticonformisme ou de la radicalité. Alors que tant de metteurs en scène se dirigent vers la facilité des cadres établis, des recettes de l’efficacité, Matthias Langhoff semble se réinventer sans cesse, résolvant des énigmes, bâtissant ses édifices de théâtre jusqu’à atteindre l’acuité, la justesse, la force qu’il sait correspondre aux œuvres dont il s’empare. Ceci, en puisant dans son imaginaire fourmillant, dans ses éternelles obsessions.
François Chattot : un Hamlet à la lisière du théâtre
Un artiste démiurge ? Assurément. Un artiste qui s’empare aujourd’hui de Hamlet, confrontant l’œuvre de William Shakespeare à un univers de music-hall. A moins qu’il ne s’agisse de l’inverse. « Qui est assis sur le dos de qui, s’interroge-t-il, est-ce le cabaret qui est sur le dos de Shakespeare ou Shakespeare qui avance sur le dos du cabaret ? Je ne le saurai qu’à la fin de l’expérience. » Extirpant deux vers de la pièce — En manteau rouge, le matin traverse / La rosée qui sur son passage paraît du sang —, Matthias Langhoff rebaptise Hamlet et crée un spectacle musical enjoué, un spectacle dont l’esprit facétieux laisse pointer toute la profondeur de cette méditation sur la mort, sur le doute, sur la mémoire. Incarnant un Hamlet vieillissant, François Chattot se situe d’emblée comme à lisière de la représentation, donnant parfois l’impression de ne pas vouloir participer à l’illusion du théâtre auquel il se sait prendre part. Comme si le phénomène d’indifférenciation décrit par René Girard dans son ouvrage sur Shakespeare* venait relier le comédien à son personnage. Ces moments de distance, presque d’isolement, donnent à entendre la pièce de façon extrêmement touchante, extrêmement poétique. Aux côtés de François Chattot, chacun des douze interprètes (Agnès Dewitte, Gilles Geenen, Jean-Claude Jay, Patricia Pottier, Jean-Marc Stehlé, Emmanuel Wion…) apporte sa pierre à cette imposante construction. Car ce « Hamlet-Cabaret » est avant tout un vrai grand spectacle d’acteurs. Un spectacle qui, au-delà de sa gaieté, confronte nos regards aux traumatismes de l’histoire de l’homme, au poids de sa désespérance.
