On peut commencer par la fin pour tenter de rendre l’impression laissée par cette version d’Hamlet qu’une irrévérence de bon aloi ne suffit pas à faire décoller. Au terme de la pièce, Hamlet se laisse attirer dans le piège que lui tend son oncle Claudius, nouveau roi auto-proclamé du Danemark, époux fratricide et régicide de sa mère. Il s’y laisse attirer malgré de noirs pressentiments, un sixième sens qui lui fait entrevoir que la mort sera au rendez-vous et consent donc à participer à un duel à l’épée au cours duquel pointes et coupes de vin sont secrètement empoisonnées. Dans sa mise en scène, Igor Mendjisky, plutôt que de traiter le duel meurtrier sous la forme théâtralement compliquée du combat de cape et d’épée, décide de faire s’opposer Hamlet et Laërte dans un défi consistant pour chacun à plonger sa tête au fond d’une bassine d’eau, jusqu’à ne plus pouvoir respirer. L’idée surprend. A chaque manche, le premier qui relève la tête perd l’assaut. Elle séduit aussi. Un temps, on entrevoit une fertilité symbolique du décalage, sa théâtralité, sa pertinence esthétique. Malheureusement, un traitement trop rapide, un peu laborieux, insuffisamment pensé, laisse très vite penser qu’au fond rien d’autre ne justifie cette trouvaille que le souci d’éviter les aléas scéniques d’un combat.
Une capacité à s’engager
Dans cet Hamlet, les trouvailles du genre sont nombreuses : des coupes dans le texte qui assurent un resserrement du rythme, des ajouts textuels parfois drôles qui donnent à la pièce une certaine contemporanéité, des passages hors-scène, des ruptures de ton efficaces, pour ne citer qu’elles. Beaucoup séduisent au début, puis déçoivent, faute de signifier. Pour porter le tout, le rôle titre d’Hamlet, omniprésent, un peu envahissant, est interprété par Romain Cottard, grand échassier à la présence incontestable, dans une composition qui manque de simplicité et de sobriété. Avec lui, la torture intérieure du personnage se traduit en une gestuelle et des mimiques souvent redondantes, et un phrasé tantôt démonstratif, tantôt affecté, qui souligne le sens du texte ou le traverse à toute vitesse, plutôt que de le nourrir d’intériorité. Mais de sa prestation on retient également une certaine envergure et une vraie capacité à s’engager. C’est décidément à l’image de l’ensemble : une impression sympathique, que laissent ceux qui osent se lancer, rattrapée par la déception de ne pas les voir arriver.
