Le ténor Hans-Jörg Mammel est un familier de l’œuvre vocale de Schubert, sur laquelle il porte un regard original, sans aucun doute lié à son travail sur les répertoires anciens – il est en effet un partenaire régulier de Thomas Hengelbrock, Phillipe Herreweghe et Jean Tubéry. Son enregistrement du cycle La Belle Meunière, accompagné à la guitare par Matthias Kläger (Ars Musici, 2000), avait fait sensation, de même que sa belle lecture du Voyage d’hiver, éclairée par le pianoforte d’Arthur Schoonderwoerd (Alpha, 2005). Cette fois, il s’empare autrement de ce dernier cycle, en le chantant dans « l’interprétation composée » qu’en a faite l’excellent compositeur et chef d’orchestre Hans Zender. La musique de Schubert s’y glisse dans de nouveaux habits orchestraux, certes surprenants mais cependant étrangement fidèles à l’esprit de l’œuvre qui n’y perd rien, loin de là, de sa théâtralité.
