Un sculpteur d’ondes : Hiroaki Umeda, dont le travail a été découvert en France en 2002, ne cesse de remettre en jeu les définitions de la danse et de la chorégraphie. Au fil d’une série de pièces, interprétées en solo pour la plupart, il chorégraphie aussi bien le mouvement que la musique et la vidéo, faisant de son propre corps une surface de projection pour une matière sonore et visuelle. Dans Haptic cependant, il délaisse la vidéo, pour se focaliser sur la lumière : comment perçoit-on une couleur ? Comment le corps, pris dans un bain lumineux, nous apparaît-il ? La perception du spectateur est également au cœur de Adapting for Distortion, qui s’inspire de l’art cinétique et repose sur les possibilités offertes par l’informatique : les effets d’optique distordent à la fois notre perception du temps, de l’espace et du mouvement. Dans ce bain visuel, le corps du performer, peu à peu, s’estompe jusqu’à devenir… une ombre.
