Hall Montana se souvient et raconte la vie de sa famille, de ses amis et de la communauté noire américaine des années 50 à 60. Quatre adolescents se croisent : Julia, l’évangéliste charismatique, Jimmy, son petite frère souffre-douleur, le talentueux Arthur, chanteur de gospel prometteur, et Hall, qui s’apprête à partir faire la guerre en Corée au nom d’un Etat impérialiste. « Harlem Quartet est un hymne d’amour vibrant, un chant d’amour de Hall à son jeune frère », mort prématurément, sans que l’amour de Jimmy n’ait pu le sauver. « J’ai pensé un dispositif très simple, qui nous permettrait de passer de la musique à la parole, au jeu dans l’intimité d’une chambre qui serait définie par une surface de projection. », dit Elise Vigier qu’accompagnent dans ce projet le poète écrivain, slameur américain Saul Williams et les musiciens français Manu Léonard et Marc Sens.
