Remarqué en 1998, lors du Festival des jeunes auteurs du Royal Court, à Londres (sa pièce Bluebird y était mise en scène par Gordon Anderson), Simon Stephens (né en 1971) est l’auteur d’une quinzaine de pièces. Des pièces à travers lesquelles le jeune dramaturge a toujours essayé de parler « du monde où il vit », faisant se rejoindre sa position d’écrivain et celle d’un individu capable de se « tenir face au monde, bouche bée d’étonnement ». « Mes pièces sont tout aussi habitées par le doute, le manque de confiance, les contradictions et les incohérences, que je le suis moi-même, déclarait-il en 2008, lors d’une conférence donnée à Hanovre, et il me semble que le monde l’est tout autant. Je ne considère pas que mes pièces soient là pour proposer des solutions ni pour faire valoir un point de vue idéologique sur une tribune politique. Je raconte des histoires sur des gens. Et les gens sont remarquables dans la façon qu’ils ont de toujours, toujours, se contredire et contredire leur culture. »
Le voyage initiatique d’une quarantenaire déphasée
La femme dont Simon Stephens raconte l’histoire dans Harper Regan est une anglaise de quarante ans (interprétée par Marina Foïs, aux côtés de Caroline Chaniolleau, Gérard Desarthe, Pierre Moure, Alice et Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) qui part en guerre contre ses propres résignations et terrasse les monstres d’une réalité étouffante. « Dans un laps de temps très court, explique Lukas Hemleb, Harper Regan va vivre des moments extraordinaires, des instants qui vont l’extraire de son quotidien, des heures libératrices et des moments de destruction. » Séduit par « la délicatesse, l’intelligence, l’élégance » avec lesquelles Simon Stephens est parvenu à rendre présente la crainte du pire contenue dans l’existence de son héroïne, le metteur en scène a souhaité « traquer et trouver le sens des silences, des non-dits » afin de « constituer un univers et composer des personnages en-dehors des mots ». « Il faut trouver une plénitude corporelle, charnelle, qui n’apparaît pas dans les dialogues mais dans les silences », poursuit-il. Une manière d’échapper à une simple succession de tableaux naturalistes, de rejoindre « l’ailleurs inattendu » sous-tendu par l’œuvre du dramaturge anglais.
