Un peu d’étymologie : le hazan est le ministre du culte à la voix profonde, chargé de véhiculer la liturgie hébraïque. Un homme pieux doublé d’un chanteur capable de toucher les âmes. Pour cela, il doit connaître le texte, mais il se doit aussi de savoir le transcender par sa verve improvisée. C’est ainsi qu’au fil des générations cette tradition orale s’est transmise, modifiée au gré des interprétations et des altérations induites par la proximité avec d’autres cultures. La communauté sépharade en donne une autre version que celle proposée par les Ashkénazes, où le chœur répond aux mélopées du hazan. Autant de variations que peuvent découvrir fidèles et néophytes le temps d’un récital, où se succèdent de grandes voix de la hazanout.
