Figure fascinante qu’Hedda Gabler? Pourquoi la fille du général, caractère
volontaire, ambitieux, rebelle aux conventions, a-t-elle a épousé Tesman,
historien terne et besogneux ? Que cherche-t-elle avec Lövborg, son amour
d’antan, brillant esprit, autrefois débauché mais qui a retrouvé le chemin du
succès ? D’où vient ce vertige de destruction qui l’habite et la pousse jusqu’au
suicide ? « Je n?ai pas cherché à développer une thèse. La grande affaire a
été pour moi de peindre des hommes, des caractères et des destinées en prenant
pour points de départs certaines lois sociales et opinions courantes. »
disait Ibsen. Dans cette pièce écrite en 1890, l’auteur norvégien dissèque à vif
la tragédie d’une femme éprise d’absolu, dont les rêves finissent dans le
broyeur médiocre de l’existence. Il tranche aussi les cartilages sclérosés d’une
société figée dans les principes bourgeois. Richard Brunel, jeune metteur en
scène associé au Théâtre de la Manufacture de Nancy, a choisi la brune Cécile
Garcia-Fogel pour son Hedda. Il chauffe les tensions entre désir et cadre
social, exigence morale et impulsion vitale, liberté chaotique et ordre
répressif. Jusqu’à la rupture.
