La venue d’Ivo van Hove en France s’annonce toujours comme la promesse d’un grand spectacle. On se souvient de ses exceptionnelles Tragédies romaines (à partir de Coriolan, Jules César et Antoine et Cléopâtre) au Festival d’Avignon 2008, de l’agonie cruelle d’Agnès dans son adaptation de Cris et Chuchotements, et du remarquable Scènes de la vie conjugale, arpentant avec une maîtrise et une qualité d’introspection rares les étapes de la vie à deux – deux spectacles présentés à Créteil, son lieu partenaire en France. Le metteur en scène revient à Créteil avec un chef-d’œuvre centré sur un personnage de femme, Hedda Gabler d’Ibsen, tragédie de l’insatisfaction, de la désillusion et des rêves trompeurs, au cœur d’une société codifiée et étriquée. Installant l’intrigue dans le loft contemporain d’une grande ville, dans notre époque avide de satisfactions immédiates, Ivo van Hove souligne le paradoxe d’Hedda, si fréquent et si humain : « nous regardons une femme qui a un immense appétit pour la vie, mais qui ne fait rien pour parvenir à cette vie à laquelle elle aspire tellement ». Du grand théâtre en perspective, qui se confronte à la recherche du sens de l’existence.
