La nouvelle édition du JVC jazz Festival Paris, marathon musical de 9 jours éclatés en plus de 60 concerts parisiens du 10 au 18 octobre, est incontestablement dominée par ce concert exceptionnel d’Herbie Hancock à la Salle Pleyel. Un pianiste majeur, qu’on ne présente plus, entré en musique par le piano classique (adolescent, il joue en soliste accompagné par le Chicago Symphony Orchestra), avant de s’introduire dans le monde du jazz en partageant la scène, dès l’âge de 20 ans, avec des géants nommés Coleman Hawkins, ou Donald Byrd. Puis viendront les collaborations suivies avec Wayne Shorter et surtout Miles Davis qui, en mai 1963, lui propose de rejoindre son nouveau quintet pour cinq années qui font partie de l’histoire du jazz. Depuis, le rôle d’Hancock fut déterminant et souvent visionnaire en intégrant dans le jazz d’autres musiques, de l’électro au hip-hop en passant par la pop music, à l’image de son dernier opus en date qui vient de recevoir le Grammy Award du meilleur album de l’année : « River : the Joni Letters », hommage à Joni Mitchell enregistré en compagnie de Norah Jones, Tina Turner et Leonard Cohen… Pour ce concert parisien, Herbie Hancock lève le voile sur la musique de son nouvel album enregistré en quartet.
