Au-delà de la formidable bataille littéraire qu’Hernani occasionna entre les partisans des classiques et les adeptes du romantisme, qui se souvient de son intrigue ? A qui ce titre rappelle-t-il l’histoire de ces deux amants qui meurent volontairement par le poison dans la nuit de leurs noces, ou la fable d’un bandit qui retrouve son rang à la cour d’Espagne ? Mettant en scène la mythique pièce hugolienne, Christine Berg se propose de « faire entrevoir le chef-d’œuvre derrière le mythe. L’ambivalence de la pièce, sa polyphonie, la richesse d’interprétation qu’elle autorise. Et sa dimension politique prophétique ». L’intention déclarée s’accompagne d’un enthousiasme fondamental : « tenter le grand voyage dans cette cathédrale théâtrale où tout est jeu, où ce monstre de Victor Hugo mène une sarabande qui nous éblouit, depuis son dix-neuvième siècle, jusque dans nos tripes. » Réduite à six protagonistes, la pièce est allégée, l’intrigue ajustée pour aller à l’essentiel. La forme respecte et exalte la facture baroque de Hugo, fidèle à son panache.
