« J’ai découvert Ernst Toller à travers son roman autobiographique, Une jeunesse en Allemagne, écrit en 1933 au moment où l’Allemagne nazie brûle ses livres et le déchoit de sa nationalité. Son extrême sensibilité, sa finesse d’esprit, son engagement sincère et total m’ont bouleversée », confie Christine Letailleur. Composée entre 1921 et 1922 dans la forteresse où Toller purge alors une peine de cinq ans pour avoir participé au mouvement révolutionnaire allemand conduit par Rosa Luxembourg, Karl Liebknecht et Gustav Landauer, la fiction appuyée sur le vécu raconte la tragédie d’un jeune soldat revenant de guerre mutilé, privé de sa virilité. Décidé à se battre pour reconstruire sa vie auprès de sa femme, le héros apprend que celle-ci s’est laissée séduire par son ami. « Au delà même de ce qui est dénoncé – la guerre , l’antisémitisme, l’exploitation des classes populaires et celles des femmes -, l’œuvre parle avant tout d’amour. Elle pose la question cruciale du désir, de la chair. C’est une tragédie humaine, intime. Et cette dimension fait la profondeur et la grandeur de la pièce, » souligne la metteur en scène. Avec Stanislas Nordey dans le rôle-titre, et Charline Grand dans celui de Grete.
