Hiroshima le 6 août 1945, la terrible arme nouvelle de la bombe atomique est lâchée par les Américains sur la ville. En neuf secondes, deux cent mille morts, quatre-vingt mille blessés. Honorant la commande d’un film sur l’horreur atomique, Alain Resnais fait appel pour l’écriture du scénario à Marguerite Duras qui, saisie par « la stupeur à l’idée qu’on ait osé, à l’idée qu’on ait réussi », ressent l’impossibilité d’en parler ou d’en formuler la terreur indicible. Le commentaire de Duras proche de la litanie et de la psalmodie advient toutefois avec une force tendue de réserve. Hiroshima mon amour devient le flambeau de la Nouvelle Vague au cinéma. À l’évocation radicale de l’apocalypse nucléaire se conjugue un amour de rencontre entre un Japonais (Eiji Okada) et une Française (Emmanuelle Riva) venue dans la ville sinistrée tourner un film sur la paix en cet été 1957. La comédienne est meurtrie pour avoir aimé un Allemand à Nevers en temps de guerre. Au reproche, « Tu n’as rien vu à Hiroshima. Rien. » répond la parole amère : « J’ai tout vu à Hiroshima. Tout. » C’est qu’aimer ou souffrir, vivre en pleine jeunesse un premier amour ou une catastrophe inouïe, les expériences s’apparentent pour les victimes de la passion, objets ballottés dans les griffes du destin.
Tournage ciné de scènes de tendresse
L’histoire de cette liaison passagère intime, si déplacée soit-elle dans le contexte historique, s’inscrit pleinement dans une réalité odieuse. Dans quelques années, le Japonais pensera à cette histoire « comme à l’horreur de l’oubli ». Le mal ne doit jamais être abandonné aux objets perdus mais dénoncé toujours. Julien Bouffier propose une mise en scène bi-frontale dans laquelle un pan de mur bâti de boîtes d’archives empêche la vision du public. La paroi murale fait office d’écran pour le reportage vidéo de l’équipe artistique en repérage à Hiroshima sur les traces de Resnais et de Riva. Entre caméra perche et micro, Vanessa Liautey et le Syrien Ramzi Choukair incarnent avec une intensité grave ces victimes de la souffrance et de l’horreur, sur les chansons de Dimoné. Le public est convié à un tournage ciné de scènes de tendresse ou de confrontation brutale avec la mort, au détriment d’un jeu théâtral libre et dégagé. Bougies commémoratives, cartons d’archives, pluie de cendres, les signes s’accumulent en neutralisant l’imaginaire, malgré des qualités certaines de dramaturgie inventive.
