Pauvre bougre, soldat égaré, naïf et vulnérable, Joseph croise le diable qui détourne le chemin tracé vers sa promise et, en échange de son violon, c’est-à-dire de son âme, lui donne un livre lui permettant de prédire l’avenir. Funeste pacte… Stravinsky composa en 1917 un mimodrame sur cet argument d’inspiration faustienne, s’appuyant sur le texte de Ramuz qui reprend un vieux conte russe. Il fallait un poète de la scène pour porter cette œuvre majeure du répertoire musical. « Thomas Fersen porte tous les rôles du livret et apporte en effet sa singularité, son onirisme un peu lunaire et sa manière joueuse de débusquer la poésie dans la plus banale quotidienneté. Il donne à entendre ce texte majeur dans toute son âpre beauté. » raconte Roland Auzet, metteur en scène. Tout à la fois soldat, diable et narrateur, Thomas Fersen nous entraîne dans les méandres intérieurs de ce déserteur égaré dans sa destinée et fait vibrer toutes les résonances du conte sur l’état du monde.
