La conteuse Eva Luna, interprétée par Sophie Shaikh, est « comme une pipelette qui vient secrètement colporter au public » quatre histoires de femmes, glanées dans le mystère et la magie des terres australes. Adaptant à la scène quatre des vingt-trois contes imaginés par la Chilienne Isabel Allende, Philippe Hottier a choisi de cheminer entre les secrets de l’écriture et le « méli-mélo » de la réalité pour faire apparaître « la signification profonde, le sens sous-jacent à l’histoire elle-même ». Dans Le Pensionnaire de Maîtresse Inès, on apprend comment les habitants du village d’Agua Santa s’unissent pour cacher le crime de celle qui a tué l’assassin de son fils. Dans Maria la simple, on découvre la vie d’une prostituée de Santiago devenue putain par amour. Bouche de crapaud nous emmène en Patagonie à la rencontre d’Hermelinda, femme sauvage inventant des jeux érotiques à sa fantaisie. Enfin, dans L’Oubli au plus profond de l’oubli, une femme et un homme ayant subi la torture et la trahison se retrouvent pour partager « le plus jalousement gardé de leurs secrets ». Un spectacle de fièvre et de sang, sensuel et langoureux, qui explore le visible et l’invisible et met « en valeur la puissance humaine à travers les mots et la parole », comme le revendique Sophie Shaikh qui s’empare de tous ces personnages extraordinaires et étonnants.
