Faustin Linyekula choisit, dans Histoire(s) du Théâtre II, de se replonger dans la mémoire de son pays. Il pense alors au Ballet du Zaïre, créé l’année même de sa naissance, en 1974, par le président Mobutu Sese Seko. On connaît aujourd’hui toute l’ambiguïté paradoxale de ces folklores réinventés, généralement par des régimes autoritaires, pour définir une identité « nationale », qu’il s’agisse de ces nouveaux pays d’Afrique enfin indépendants, ou, à l’Est, de toutes les composantes d’une Union Soviétique triomphante. Il se trouve que la danse, au moins depuis Louis XIV, a toujours été un vecteur de choix pour donner un visage au pouvoir en place, et le bras armé d’une diplomatie culturelle. Faustin Linyekula, en héritier de ce récit, retrouve trois artistes fondateurs du Ballet et les intègre à son spectacle pour façonner une recherche interrogeant la nation zaïroise, ex-Congo Belge, ex-Etat indépendant du Congo, future République démocratique du Congo. A leurs côtés, Faustin Linyekula et deux comédiens congolais et belge confrontent récits personnels et Histoire.
