Le titre est-il aussi ironique qu’il en a l’air ?
Hofesh Shechter : Eh bien… l’ironie a pour qualité de révéler les faiblesses et les lézardes. Je pense que le terme de « danse contemporaine » est amusant et qu’il est en contradiction avec lui-même. De fait, le titre est juste quelque chose auquel commencer à penser avant d’entrer dans le spectacle, pour déclencher une question, et celle que vous avez posée ici est la bonne !
Pourquoi ?
H.S. : Parce que les définitions échoueront toujours.
« L’espace d’une réflexion sur ce que nous voulons vraiment que la danse contemporaine soit. »
Quel est l’objet de cette création ?
H.S. : Cette création est là pour nous donner l’espace d’une réflexion sur ce que nous voulons vraiment que la danse contemporaine soit. A quel point sommes-nous honnêtes avec nous-mêmes dans le désir de la voir s’agrandir, évoluer, se renouveler ? A quel point voulons-nous qu’elle soit « contemporaine » ? Jusqu’où sommes-nous bloqués et coincés dans ce que nous pensons qu’elle devrait être ? Mais toutes ces interrogations ne sont intéressantes qu’à un niveau conceptuel. L’œuvre elle-même est là pour créer un déplacement énergétique qui précipite les valeurs et les systèmes de croyances à un niveau plus profond. La pièce est là pour nous désorienter, nous emmener dans un endroit où nous préférons poser les questions qu’y répondre en suivant de vieux modèles.
L’avez-vous conçue dans un souci « pédagogique » pour les jeunes interprètes de Shechter 2 ?
H.S. : Je suis ravi que de jeunes danseurs fassent partie de cette exploration de notre forme d’art – cela ne fera que rendre ce questionnement plus intéressant et plus intelligent.
