Son geste cadencé, tout en fluidité syncopée et subtiles désarticulations, se fond dans les lignes lumineuses et projections multicolores qui étreignent son corps : en scène, Hiroaki Umeda trouble autant la perception de l’espace que les contours de sa présence. Formé d’abord à la photographie à la Nihon University- College of Art de Tokyo puis venu à la danse, le performeur japonais conjugue installation cinétique et mouvement dans des pièces graphiques et minimalistes de haute tension. « La lumière n’existe pas pour montrer la danse mais pour créer un espace. Avec ses variations, elle devient dynamique… Je veux la travailler comme je travaille le son et l’image, en créant des changements d’état. » explique-t-il. Avec Holistic Strata, son dernier solo, il pousse l’exploration des sensations visuelles jusqu’aux mécanismes hallucinatoires. Dans 2.Repulsion, pièce pour trois interprètes créée en 2010, il délaisse la technologie pour modeler la gestuelle hip-hop en en décalant le rythme et l’énergie… déroutant autrement les sensations.
