L’année Messiaen touche à sa fin et l’approche de la date anniversaire de la naissance du compositeur, le 10 décembre 1908, est l’occasion pour le Théâtre de l’Athénée de se lancer à son tour dans une série d’hommages, en six concerts du 9 au 14 décembre.
Le premier concert, le 9 décembre, a le mérite de faire entendre, aux côtés du motet O Sacrum Convivium ! et des Cinq rechants, œuvre rapidement devenue un classique du répertoire pour chœur a capella, quelques pièces des membres du groupe Jeune France, souvent évoqué, rarement programmé. Seront ainsi à découvrir l’Épithalame d’André Jolivet et le Cantique des cantiques de Daniel-Lesur. Seul manque Yves Baudrier, que l’excellent ensemble vocal Sequenza 9.3 de Catherine Simonpietri a remplacé pour l’occasion par des extraits du Printemps du compositeur de la Renaissance Claude Le Jeune. Le lendemain, jour même du centenaire d’Olivier Messiaen, son chef-d’œuvre chambriste, le Quatuor pour la fin du temps sera interprété par les élèves et professeurs du Conservatoire de la rue de Madrid, là même où Messiaen tenait son fameux cours d’analyse. C’est justement l’un des élèves du maître, le pianiste et compositeur Michaël Levinas (né en 19), qui ouvre le concert du 11 décembre, avec son quintette à cordes Lettres enlacées IV, interprété par l’ensemble qu’il a co-fondé en 1973, L’Itinéraire. Au programme également, sous la directionde Mark Foster : Talea de Gérard Grisey (1946-1998), également co-fondateur de l’ensemble, le superbe B for Sonata pour piano de Betsy Jolas (née en 1926), les Oiseaux exotiques, concerto de chambre pour piano et ensemble de Messiaen et, en clin d’œil, le Triple duo d’Elliott Carter qui fêtera ce jour ses… cent ans.
L’œuvre vocale, un trésor méconnu
Surtout, ce mini-festival, intitulé « Les Voix de Messiaen », se penche sur l’un des aspects de l’œuvre les moins connus : sa musique vocale. En 3 concerts seront donnés les trois grands cycles de mélodies composés par Messiaen, dont il a lui-même écrit les poèmes. Le 12 décembre, Isabelle Cals chante ainsi Harawi, ce « chant d’amour et de mort » en douze tableaux qui constitue, associé aux Cinq Rechants et à la célèbre Turangalîlâ-Symphonie, une « trilogie de Tristan ». Et l’on y découvre, en effet, dans l’accompagnement de piano, quelques échos de la symphonie. Il s’y trouve aussi quelques-uns des traits les plus caractéristiques de l’écriture de Messiaen, dans les couleurs, les notes répétées (doublant des onomatopées) et, bien sûr, les chants d’oiseaux, particulièrement ici dans la seconde mélodie, « Bonjour toi, Colombe verte ». Complété par des airs et mélodies de Mozart et Debussy interprétés par de jeunes solistes de l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra, Harawi précède les Chants de ciel et de Terre (par Natacha Constantin, le 13) et les Poèmes pour Mi (par Marie-Adeline Henry, le 14), chaque fois précédés de pages qui ont influencé le compositeur, de Moussorgski à Berlioz.
