Jerome Robbins, personnalité majeure de l’art chorégraphique, disparu en 1998, a traversé toute l’histoire de la danse moderne et contemporaine : la naissance de la danse moderne, mais aussi la comédie musicale, ou encore le cinéma – on lui doit la chorégraphie de West Side Story. Il se passionna pour des styles différents (il fut le compagnon de route de George Balanchine et de ses recherches néoclassiques, tout en étant influencé par le jazz, le music hall) et travailla également à la mise en œuvre d’une danse intimement liée au théâtre et au chant. L’hommage que lui rend l’Opéra de Paris éclaire cette diversité : En Sol est un clin d’œil aux comédies musicales de Broadway ; In the Night, sur la musique de Chopin, témoigne de sa virtuosité dans l’exploration des sentiments humains ; The Concert (également sur la musique de Chopin) illustre son humour et ses dons théâtraux. Une quatrième pièce, Triade, est signée Benjamin Millepied : il l’a dédiée au chorégraphe qui lui fit faire ses premiers pas sur scène.
