Helsinki, 1977. Quelques jeunes compositeurs fondent la société « Korvat auki » (« Oreilles ouvertes ») pour promouvoir la musique nouvelle. Au-delà de leurs différences de style, une durable et sincère camaraderie les liera des décennies durant. Dès les années 1980, Kaija Saariaho (1952-2023) et Magnus Lindberg (né en 1958) se croisent ainsi dans les studios de l’Ircam à Paris et bénéficient pour leur œuvres orchestrales du soutien enthousiaste du chef Esa-Pekka Salonen (né en 1958). Ce dernier associe l’Orchestre de Paris et l’Ensemble Intercontemporain pour rendre hommage à la compositrice disparue avec Notes on Light, pour violoncelle et orchestre (avec Anssi Karttunen), bel exemple de son imaginaire orchestral traversé de lumière (Aliisa Neige Barrière, la fille de Kaija Saariaho, dirigera quant à elle le concerto pour flûte L’Aile du songe, avec Sophie Cherrier). En regard, Kraft (1985) de Lindberg, symphonie éruptive pour solistes, électronique et orchestre, tout autant lyrique que bruitiste, complexe et évidente à la fois. Et toujours, l’ombre de Sibelius, avec Les Océanides (1914).
