Mstislav Rostropovitch, qui vient de mourir à l’âge de quatre-vingts ans, restera comme le plus grand violoncelliste de son temps. Outre son immense stature de musicien, l’histoire retiendra aussi son aptitude héroïque à s’engager, à la fois sur le plan politique (il soutient Soljenitsyne en 1970 et doit émigrer à l’Ouest en 1974, avant de devenir l’un des symboles de la chute du mur de Berlin) et sur celui de la création musicale. Tout au long de sa carrière, Rostropovitch suscita la composition d’œuvres nouvelles pour son instrument par les plus éminents compositeurs, de Chostakovitch à Dutilleux et de Prokofiev à Britten. La disparition de « Slava » laisse un vide terrible et les concerts d’hommage se succèdent sur les scènes du monde entier. À Pleyel, après l’Orchestre de Paris, le 24 mai dernier, en compagnie de Tatiana Vassilieva et Xavier Phillips, c’est aujourd’hui au tour de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France de revenir sur l’héritage du violoncelliste russe. Michel Plasson dirige un programme partagé entre des œuvres de Bernstein, Eric Tanguy, Martin Matalon et Dvorak, avec en soliste la violoncelliste française Anne Gastinel, ex-Grand Prix du Concours Rostropovitch, et les « Philhar’cellistes », l’ensemble de violoncelles de l’orchestre.
