Le retour en grâce des contre-ténors sur les scènes lyriques est un phénomène relativement récent. Poussés par la vigueur du renouveau de l’interprétation baroque, ils ont entrepris la reconquête de rôles originellement écrits pour les castrats et tenus le plus souvent depuis le 19e siècle par des femmes, altos ou mezzo-sopranos, voire sopranos pour les rôles écrits dans les tessitures les plus aiguës. Sur scène, le recours à un contre-ténor a le mérite de rendre l’action plus vraisemblable en évitant le recours au travestissement. En concert, ce sont une couleur particulière, des inflexions parfois enfantines et, finalement, ce qui peut être ressenti comme une certaine étrangeté qui attirent et intriguent l’oreille. Mathieu Salama, contre-ténor sopraniste, revendique justement cette « voix différente » dont il cherche à exprimer toute la puissance d’émotion. À travers ces concerts comme dans l’enregistrement qu’il leur a consacré (label Crescendo Art & Music), il fait revivre les airs composés pour les grands castrats par Haendel, Caccini, Caldara, Porpora, mais aussi Bach ou Purcell. Il est accompagné par les gambistes Genneviève L’Hostis et Bruno Angé et la claveciniste Ghislaine Gignoux.
