Acteur, élève d’Alain Cuny, il marque de son interprétation de nombreux spectacles, notamment la création d’Iphigénie Hôtel de Michel Vinaver par Antoine Vitez. On se souvient, également, de sa fascinante interprétation du Spectre dans Hamlet, avec le même metteur en scène, du fourbe Marinelli dans Emilia Galotti de Lessing, avec Jacques Lassalle ou, plus récemment, du rôle du Marchand dans sa propre mise en scène de L’Exception et la règle de Bertolt Brecht. Car Alain Ollivier fut aussi l’un des metteurs en scène les plus marquants de sa génération. Inlassable découvreur de textes, c’est lui qui fit connaître en France le théâtre de Kateb Yacine, Thomas Bernhard et Nelson Rodrigues. Mais son parcours reste avant tout marqué par sa rencontre déterminante avec l’écrivain Pierre Guyotat et la création de son texte Bond en avant, en 1973. En 2002, Alain Ollivier quitte le Studio-Théâtre de Vitry — lieu singulier qui lui ressemblait tant — pour prendre la direction du Théâtre Gérard-Philipe de Saint-Denis. « Le théâtre, c’est de la lumière où se délie la langue »*, disait cet artisan de la scène. Son parcours restera un modèle d¹exigence et de clarté, dans l’incarnation la plus aboutie de l’action poétique.
