Formée à la Juilliard School of Music de New-York, Vendetta Mathea a débuté en tant qu’interprète en 1971. Elle danse dans les compagnies de Walter Nicks, Katherine Dunham ou Paul Taylor, avant de commencer à composer ses propres pièces en 1979 : des soli qu’elle présentera notamment en Europe et en France, où elle s’installera pour fonder sa compagnie, à Aurillac, en 1983. On parle alors à son sujet de « danse contemporaine ethnique » : ses origines afro-américaines et son combat pour les droits civiques (elle militait à l’époque de Martin Luther King) trouvent un écho dans ses pièces. Au fil d’une cinquantaine de créations, elle s’invente un chemin à l’écart des grands courants de la danse contemporaine. Avec Homme Animal, créé en 2009, elle livre une œuvre inclassable, irriguée à la fois par les grands maîtres de la danse moderne américaine auprès desquels elle s’est formée, et par son attention à d’autres techniques, notamment le tai chi et les danses urbaines. Elle nous offre ainsi un voyage généreux dans les réflexions qui animent sa recherche chorégraphique depuis longtemps : la nature humaine et les émotions. Comment rester animal et devenir homme ?
