Horace, Camille, Curiace, Sabine, Valère et Julie sont issus de clans voisins et de cités amies. Là où la paix favorise et soutient les choix exogamiques, la guerre pousse au repli sur soi et sur sa horde. Albe et Rome ont mêlé leurs sangs et Sabine, l’Albaine, est mariée à Horace le Romain pendant que Camille, sœur d’Horace, est fiancée à Curiace, frère de Sabine. Mais la guerre, installée entre les deux villes, contamine bientôt les relations familiales quand il devient question de faire couler les deux sangs que la paix avait réunis. Les femmes choisissent le parti de la vie alors que les hommes se veulent les bras armés de l’Etat dont la raison implacable interdit aux cœurs de parler le langage de la concorde. Naidra Ayadi a choisi une distribution multiculturelle pour servir ce texte qui « ne peut manquer de nous évoquer les conflits ethniques et religieux dont nous sommes aujourd’hui encore les témoins », pariant ainsi sur l’intemporalité inexpugnable de la tragédie.
