Retranchés derrière les murs épais d’une maison de repos infiltrée par la bureaucratie (à moins qu’il s’agisse d’un hôpital ou d’une prison ?), les internés vivent verrouillés sous leur matricule. Roote, le directeur – un genre d’ex-colonel pompeux, sans doute aussi trouble psychologiquement que ses pensionnaires, tient le pouvoir, épaulé du sinistre placide Gibbs et de l’alcoolique pitoyable Lush. « Harold Pinter enferme des individus esclaves de leur fonction, dans un univers concentrationnaire. Ils étouffent sous des masques sociaux dont ils nient l’existence par vanité, indique Jérémie Le Louët, metteur en scène. Formatés et conditionnés au mensonge idéologique qui cache le véritable enjeu – le pouvoir -, les personnages de Hot House, en professionnels névrosés, jouent jusqu’à la lie cette « anti-fable ». Après un Macbett de Ionesco allégrement dévastateur, la compagnie Dramaticules s’empare de Hot House, pièce de jeunesse d’Harold Pinter, pour révéler le « sadisme jovial et l’atmosphère explosive de cette « serre ».
