Les gestes, les attitudes et les mots de la rue japonaise contemporaine font la matière des pièces de Toshiki Okada. Les mouvements volés disent et amplifient la perte des repères et le sentiment de désorientation. Avec Hot Pepper, Air Conditioner, and the Farewell Speech, le metteur en scène nippon revient à l’un de ses thèmes de prédilection, le travail précaire auquel la crise donne une acuité nouvelle. Toshiki Okada place le travail précaire au centre d’un triptyque à la manière de trois nouvelles de Raymond Carver. Hot Pepper met en scène des travailleuses intérimaires cherchant un restaurant pour « fêter » le départ d’Erika, une de leurs collègues licenciées. Air Conditioner propose le dialogue entre deux salariés de l’entreprise d’Erika et The Farewell Speech s’attache au discours d’adieu de l’employée. L’entreprise théâtrale de Toshiki Okada parvient à capter physiquement l’inquiétude d’un pays et d’une époque. Un regard juste et brûlant d’actualité.
