La scénographie est sobre et suggestive, un mur sur lequel sont propulsées des images américaines de guerre irakienne avec ciel brumeux de bombes et d’avions, un déversement d’interviews du président américain Bush à la face lisse qui s’interroge sur le lien entre Saddam Hussein et Al-Qaida. Pour réponse, la pendaison en live du tyran irakien auquel on passe la corde au cou. Quelques images du président Chirac, d’autres sur les convictions populistes de Sarah Palin et de son Tea-Party avec pour décor, banderoles nationalistes et effigie du candidat Obama. Parfois, un show TV de mauvais goût : devant un jury cynique d’animateurs glamour, un jeune Irakien en tenue militaire dont le bras a été arraché par la guerre chante Imagine de Lennon, et des larmes « cheap » coulent sur les visages. Voilà la démonstration du « fascisme soft », un concept du sociologue Richard Sennett ; un vrai fascisme, caché sous le masque de la démocratie et de la liberté d’opinion. Le fascisme renaît inexorablement de ses cendres quand les pouvoirs – politique, économique, policier, religieux et médiatique – sont réunis dans de mêmes mains. Hôtel Palestine est une mise en abyme du spectacle médiatique et de sa présence écrasante, hors de toute réflexion dialectique, voir Guy Debord et le situationnisme.
Jeu frontal des acteurs
Comme si un ciel de guerre et d’avions militaires, la fascination des bombes incendiaires illuminant la nuit irakienne, était la meilleure des manifestations organisées par les pacifistes. L’Europe est largement moquée par les Américains républicains de Bush : l’Allemagne et la France seraient aux prises avec leurs angoisses tandis que les Etats-Unis agissent « librement » sans arrière-pensée. Certes, les armes de destruction massive n’existaient pas en Irak, mais les ultra-républicains de Bush répondent : « un mensonge n’est pas un mensonge tant qu’on ne connaît pas la vérité. » Ce pamphlet rebattu et brut de décoffrage sur des Américains gendarmes du monde est bon à entendre car il condamne par antiphrases la dégradation des valeurs humanistes des Lumières, devenues obsolètes pour les ultralibéraux ironiques. Le jeu frontal des acteurs bouscule la tranquillité. Marc-Baylet Delperier, Christelle Glize, Patty Hannock, Philippe Hérisson, Vincent Leenhardt, Céline Massol pourraient être ces journalistes et gouvernementaux en conférence à l’Hôtel Palestine, bombardé en 2003. Un pamphlet, une caricature, une déferlante qui met le spectateur à genoux, mais qui, pour Falk Richter et Jean-Claude Fall, ranime aussi sa conscience citoyenne.
