A l’instar de Grock, qu’Howard Buten reconnaît comme son maître, l’artiste américain affirme perfectionner à l’infini un numéro évoluant sans cesse, chaque nouveau spectacle constituant une forme d’étape dans la maîtrise et l’élucidation de son personnage. Howard Buten est peu disert sur les surprises aménagées par cette « nouvelle version » des aventures de Buffo. Quoi de neuf ? « Cette version frôle la modernité car Buffo va faire la guerre contre les téléphones portables, qui ne cessent de naître partout dans la salle. » pirouette le clown… Avant que d’avouer que pour ce spectacle inédit, il « a fait appel à un collègue de longue date à Los Angeles » et que « la prestation est davantage mise en scène qu’avant ». Il ajoute : « on peut même voir trois actes, un début, un milieu et une fin et il y a également un thème : osez affronter votre destin ». Le masque de maquillage blanc de Buffo, ses yeux ronds, sa maladresse un peu pataude capable d’exploits comme par éclairs de génie le font ressembler à un enfant. Mais loin de réserver son adresse au plus jeunes, Buffo parle à « tous les publics ». « Buffo ne connaît pas le temps, dit Howard Buten, il est intemporel. Il ne connaît pas l’âge non plus puisque depuis le début, Buffo a toujours été sans âge. » Néanmoins, cette éternelle jeunesse ne s’accompagne pas d’une déréalisation vide : si Buffo « ne représente pas tout le monde », son créateur avoue espérer « que chacun trouvera un peu de lui-même pendant la soirée. »
Le personnage est action
Il arrive à Buffo d’être accompagné sur scène. Cette fois-ci, « Buffo sera seul sur scène » tout en sollicitant davantage la participation du public. Cela dit, Howard Buten entretient élégamment le mystère autour de son retour au Théâtre du Rond-Point où il avait fêté les trente ans de son personnage en 2005, comme si, puisque « character is action comme on dit en anglais – le personnage est action », il fallait voir Buffo pour commencer de pouvoir en parler. Car « comment être convaincant tout en étant un clown et surtout sans faire le clown » demande Howard Buten. « L’essentiel pour un clown, c’est sa personnalité ; c’est plus important même que ce qu’il fait sur scène ». Résolument vagabond, inclassable, rétif aux questions ou aux enfermements théoriques, Buten devient Buffo par une forme de nécessité intrinsèque et évidente. « J’ai dû choisir entre la marine marchande et le cirque. Ma mère était artiste de music-hall dans sa jeunesse, et puis la mer, c’est dangereux » sourit Howard Buten dans une ultime cabriole d’humour quand on l’interroge sur le choix de son art. Reste donc à voir et revoir Buffo pour ceux qui veulent en savoir plus !
