Espace des Arts de Chalon-sur-Saône / d’Eugène O’Neill / mes Jean-Yves Ruf
C’est le directeur de l’Espace des Arts de Chalon-sur-Saône, Philippe Buquet, qui a fait se rencontrer Jean-Yves Ruf et le comédien Gilles Cohen. Ce dernier cherchait un metteur en scène pour créer Hughie, pièce à deux personnages du dramaturge américain Eugène O’Neill (1888-1953). Une pièce courte, au sein de laquelle un homme (Erié) s’épanche auprès du gardien de l’hôtel miteux dans lequel il vit, dans le quartier de West Side à New York, à la fin des années 1920. Il lui parle de son ami Hughie, l’ancien gardien de l’hôtel qui vient de mourir. Il lui fait des confidences, se met peu à peu à se comporter avec lui comme il le faisait avec son ami disparu…
Le besoin de mentir pour ne pas s’écrouler…
« C’est d’une grande simplicité et d’une grande force, explique le metteur en scène Jean-Yves Ruf. Ce texte est en même temps extrêmement concret, contemporain, et absolument intemporel. Il se referme sur lui-même comme une fable, un mythe, et il ouvre notre écoute sur un champ profondément humain : la solitude, le besoin de mentir pour ne pas s’écrouler, pour garder un tant soit peu l’estime d’un autre, donc de soi-même. » Incarnés par Gilles Cohen (Erié) et Jacques Tresse (le Gardien), les deux personnages de Hughie s’avancent, en duo, sur le chemin des illusions et des errements humains.
