« L’Enfer, c’est les autres ! » : la vie se ressent, se perçoit à travers les autres ; toute subjectivité est une intersubjectivité et toute conscience en passe par le regard de l’autre pour apparaître à elle-même et tâcher de se définir, aux risques de la mauvaise foi. Sartre installe trois personnages dans un salon second Empire et dissèque avec autant d’humour que de cruauté les relations entre Garcin, le journaliste, Inès, l’employée des Postes et Estelle, la riche mondaine, dont les personnalités s’éclairent à mesure que se déploie le récit de leurs existences et des actes qui les ont faites. « Dans cette pièce réputée philosophique, la confrontation des corps est essentielle et le trouble sensuel est constant. » remarque le metteur en scène Laurent Ziveri qui, loin de sombrer dans l’abstraction du concept, donne chair à la pensée de Sartre en confiant aux corps des acteurs le soin de soutenir et de polariser l’intensité de ce qui les lie et les oppose. Chacun a besoin des autres pour exister, mais autrui demeure toujours celui « qui m’a volé le monde », comme le définit Sartre dans L’Etre et le néant, celui qui le « décentre » et celui avec lequel toute relation est « un pur engagement sans assurance de réciprocité ». Désireux de rendre à cette pièce « toute la place qu’elle mérite aujourd’hui », Laurent Ziveri choisit d’en monter la violence et la drôlerie, le désespoir et la vitalité.
