THÉÂTRE DE L’ATHÉNÉE / OPÉRA DE JOHN ADAMS
Les œuvres lyriques de John Adams (né en 1947) s’inspirent, pour la plupart, de l’histoire contemporaine. Si les sujets politiques (Nixon in China, La Mort de Klinghoffer, Doctor Atomic) appellent le grand opéra, le compositeur sait trouver, quand il se positionne à hauteur d’existence quotidienne, des formes originales, syncrétiques, ainsi dans les oratorios El Niño ou The Gospel according to the other Mary. Dans I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky (1995), dont le point de départ est le séisme de Los Angeles de janvier 1994, le chant regarde délibérément vers Broadway et ce « songplay », avec son orchestre ad hoc électrifié appuyé sur trois claviers, prend des accents de jazz-rock expérimental.
