C’est l’une des voix les plus reconnaissables du moment : certains la trouvent merveilleusement sensible, d’autres incroyablement maniérée. Le ténor Ian Bostridge possède à coup sûr une rare intelligence musicale, qui convient parfaitement au lied romantique (on n’est pas prêt d’oublier sa Belle meunière à l’auditorium du Louvre) et parfois moins à l’opéra. Au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, il a concocté un programme de musique baroque, mêlant Vivaldi, Caldara, Scarlatti, Haendel… Si la pureté de son legato devrait transcender les airs cantabile, on s’interroge sur sa capacité à affronter les vocalises virtuoses si courantes dans ce répertoire. Il bénéficie en tout cas d’un accompagnement luxueux : les instruments anciens d’Europa Galante, dirigés par le toujours inspiré Fabio Biondi.
