Il n’est pas question, pour Vincent Macaigne, de résumer L’Idiot, de le raconter ou de respecter son identité formelle, mais bien de réinventer, par le truchement de la scène, le mouvement et la profusion de ce roman, d’en faire une mise en dialogues, une mise en situations théâtrales. Ainsi, revendiquant un devoir de liberté et de risque, le metteur en scène souhaite créer une représentation « qui parte de la rage de Dostoïevski » pour porter son regard sur « la naïveté et la bonté du prince Mychkine, mais aussi sur le monde dans lequel il évolue, un monde féroce, cynique, où se mêlent sans hiérarchie le laid et le beau, le mesquin et le sublime, le sperme et les larmes, le sang et le rire. » Interrogeant la place que peut prendre la naïveté non seulement dans ce monde mais également dans le nôtre, Vincent Macaigne propose une réflexion sur notre époque, sur le théâtre, sur les différents champs de notre divertissement.
