La metteuse en scène Zazie Hayoun travaille à retrouver sur les planches la vie quotidienne et bruyante du petit peuple des badauds de la rue en Inde. Les comédiens Cédric Lanoë, Alejandro Nunez, Farid Zerzour et Ali Akbar, vendeur parisien de journaux à la criée, investissent le plateau du Grand Parquet, prêts à apostropher et à invectiver le spectateur. Ces marchands ambulants improvisés sont les rois du boniment qu’ils débitent pour attirer et convaincre la clientèle : les bienfaits d’une huile contre la douleur, un manuel de cours d’anglais à vingt roupies, à moins que l’on ne préfère un livre sur la magie. Voilà des colporteurs dont la camelote de mauvaise qualité et de peu de valeur n’est qu’un prétexte pour s’adresser à l’autre d’homme à homme, une façon d’« être » qui a disparu de nos villes anonymes. C’est alors qu’on quitte bien vite les bruits urbains et les cris du bazar pour pénétrer, grâce à des peintures projetées en vidéo, dans l’intérieur silencieux d’un palais somptueux, entouré d’un jardin coloré de fleurs de jasmin. Un garçon de caste privilégiée s’ennuie, il demande à sa mère étendue sur un sofa la permission d’aller s’amuser au bazar avec les gamins du peuple. La quête est rejetée.
Les instants se succèdent comme un livre d’enluminures
En échange, la dame raconte deux contes et l’enfant lui-même en dit un troisième, des histoires de bandits incapables de partager leur butin et d’un cuisinier cynique qui veut vendre ses relents d’officine culinaire à un miséreux. Mais un enfant et un conseil des sages interviennent contre le malhonnête. Enfin, un cireur de chaussures importun face à la patience de son client clôt le contenu de l’aventure narrative. Sur la fresque vidéo, le théâtre d’ombre intervient graphiquement, à côté des marionnettes à fil du Rajasthan et leur castelet. Les scènes de vie sont joyeuses, depuis la farce jouée sur le parquet de bois par les comédiens de chair, un rien grossiers forcément si on les compare aux peintures animées, et jusqu’à la miniature vidéo « agrandie » et minutieuse, un fond de scène figuratif plein de gaieté. Les instants se succèdent comme un livre d’enluminures. La beauté du spectacle tient à l’éclat des couleurs, à la profusion des détails, à la vision pittoresque de la rue peinte dans l’élégance avec ses maisons où le regard pénètre. Un voyage de songe et d’enfance riante, une promenade à l’écoute du peuple des rues.
