C’est à l’adolescence, en assistant à une représentation de Lorenzaccio à la Comédie-Française, que Frédérique Plain a pour la première fois été saisie par le théâtre d’Alfred de Musset. Un saisissement qui a marqué durablement la jeune femme, l’amenant — après une agrégation d’histoire et une formation de comédienne — à réaliser une thèse sur les mises en scène de cette pièce (thèse qu’elle est en train d’achever). Et si Frédérique Plain (qui travaille, comme assistante, aux côtés de Jean-Pierre Vincent depuis 2003) rêve de s’emparer un jour de Lorenzaccio, elle a préféré, pour son premier spectacle, investir deux œuvres courtes d’Alfred de Musset qu’elle présente en diptyque au sein d’une même représentation. Deux œuvres assez rarement jouées à travers lesquelles la jeune metteure en scène a souhaité placer face à face deux visages de l’auteur : l’un « resserré, tendu, ironique, raisonneur » (Il faut qu’une porte soit ouverte ou fermée) ; l’autre « éclaté, multiforme, optimiste, fou » (On ne saurait penser à tout).

Ces pièces, en effet, traitant toutes deux des choses de l’amour, le font à travers des tonalités distinctes. Alors que la première s’envole dans une dialectique pleine de spiritualité, joueuse mais mesurée, très tenue, la seconde laisse éclater des couleurs plus libres, plus cocasses, beaucoup plus fantaisistes. Prenant le parti de projeter les protagonistes d’Alfred de Musset dans un univers contemporain qui semble vouloir être le nôtre, Frédérique Plain a conçu un spectacle qui peine à restituer l’habileté et la drôlerie de ces deux textes. Sous sa direction, Jean-Jacques Blanc, Rodolphe Congé, Johan Daisme et Jonathan Manzambi composent une quotidienneté manquant parfois de profondeur. Ainsi, malgré toutes ses bonnes intentions, cette première mise en scène n’atteint pas son but : le rapprochement entre le XIXème siècle de l’auteur et le XXIème siècle du plateau sonne faux. Seule Caroline Piette parvient à abolir cette forme de dissonance, conférant à la Comtesse qu’elle interprète (dans On ne saurait penser à tout) de très beaux éclats de vie.
